Who is hiring in international tourism and hospitality?

From management to marketing to customer service, there are so many possible ways of working in this growing sector, and an equally expansive range of potential employers.

Hotels, Eco-lodges, Youth Hostels, B&Bs, Ski Resorts – Work in hospitality at all levels: managerial positions, reservations and bookings, administration, communications, marketing and advertising, landscaping, and cooking/food preparation.

Restaurants, Cafes, and Wineries – Work in the food and beverage industry: executive chefs, sous chefs, line cooks, servers, front of house managers, bartenders, speciality coffee baristas, and so on. In the winery industry, work in horticulture/viticulture (growing grapes, making wine), serving, and managing tasting rooms.

Adventure and Recreation Outfits – Get your adrenalin going: work as an instructor, or guide, hiking, mountain climbing and biking, scuba diving, leading safari tours, teaching yoga, surf lessons, and so on.

Travel Agencies – If you excel at customer service, look for an entry-level job with a small to medium to large travel agency; some companies, including Flight Centre, has international offices, so you can find work abroad.

Airlines – Consider a career as a flight attendant, or work in ticketing, bookings, and customer service. Working for an airline provides you with the opportunity to travel, get major discounts on flights, and work at airports around the world.

Cruise-ships and Private Yachts – Apply to work on a major cruise-liner for all levels of jobs: managerial positions, guest relations, food and beverage preparation, serving, bartending, entertainment, teaching yoga, Pilates, and other recreation activities, or even working as a hair stylist, or massage therapist at a spa. There are also limited work opportunities to join the crew of a private yacht; these people are often called ‘yachties’, or ‘stews’ and do various tasks on board, boat maintenance to housekeeping for guests to cooking, or white-glove serving and fine dining.

Non-Profit Organizations (NGOs) – Community development organizations in the Global South are exploring how to develop and market sustainable tourism opportunities as a tool for income generation. Work as a consultant, assisting NGOs to develop plans, market their services, and develop their tourism sustainably.
