IRC Background:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is at work in over 40 countries and 24 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities.

The IRC’s Food and Farming Program (FFP) helps refugees and other low-income individuals to attain education, economic empowerment and nutritional health through a range of community-based, hands-on food and farming projects. Projects include a youth job-training farm and café; a pop-up marketplace and events space; two community gardens; a farmers’ market incentive match program; food policy advocacy and healthy planning initiatives; a culinary arts vocational education program and Project CHOP, a hands-on job readiness and vocational English social enterprise.

Job Overview:

Under the supervision of the Senior Food and Farming Program Manager (SPM), the FarmWorks Program Coordinator (FPC) will be responsible for all client training, farm and café business operations related to client and social enterprise operations and special events based within and/or related to FarmWorks job training program.

The FPC will train, manage, coordinate and oversee the safe, delicious and efficient food production by IRC program participants. The FPC will oversee, coordinate and ensure smooth, code and food safety-compliant operations and usage by all participants and users. The FPC will need to balance the complex goals of coordinating an effective job training program for IRC clients while ensuring high standards in food safety and product quality. The FPC will work closely with the SPM to continually review operational costs and sales revenue to evolve the program to a sustainable social enterprise model.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop, monitor and continuously update a comprehensive set of IRC farm and café standard operating procedures (SOP) for all clients, staff, interns and community partners related to the FarmWorks and Café job training program;
  • Develop, monitor and continuously update a comprehensive training curriculum and client referral services for all program participants in the FarmWorks and Café job training program;
  • Work with internal IRC partners, such as IRC Youth Programs and the Safety and Wellness Unit, as well as external partners, such as local high schools, to steadily and successfully outreach and enroll eligible FarmWorks participants;
  • Recruit, train and coach interns and volunteers in the FarmWorks curriculum and site-related operations relating to the Youth FarmWorks and Café program;
  • In partnership with the SPM, strategically grow Youth FarmWorks and Café business operations and financial bottomline;
  • Work closely with FFP’s Pop on 30th programming staff, marketing intern and community partners for smooth partnerships and collaborations;
  • Successfully meet all relevant grant and project deliverables, outcomes and reporting requirements as directed by IRC’s funder guidelines as well as internal IRC standards of professional project management, technical competence and organizational policy;
  • Ensure all project and client data and evaluation needs are accurately collected in a timely manner. Must complete all reporting deadlines on-time;
  • Exhibit a high-level of professionalism in communication, workflow and deliverables;
  • Must complete project activities and services following all IRC and funder financial protocols for project expenditures and reporting;
  • Contribute, collaborative and partner with members in the FFP Department on synergistic food and farming projects and services;
  • Other duties, as necessary.

Job Requirements:

· Undergraduate degree in any social science or natural sciences required; or mix of equivalent years of education and related work experience;

  • At least one year of experience working in on a commercial farm or equivalent agriculture experience;
  • At least one year of teaching or equivalent teaching, mentoring experience;
  • Professional experience in food service, customer service and/or marketing;
  • Must love working with people and helping them grow;
  • Must love taking care of plants with a focus on production and yield through sustainable agriculture methods;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as office/computer skills, for evaluation data entry, project reporting and IRC team collaboration;
  • Ability to work in a low-literacy, multi-cultural and multi-lingual work environment;
  • Ability to efficiently work independently as well as in a close, collaborative environment;

  • Strong written, verbal, computer and interpersonal communication skills are required.

Working Environment:

  • Urban farm and garden environment most of the time;
  • Standard, professional office environment;
  • Regular travel to off-site locations is required;
  • Must be available to work on Saturdays and some evenings;
  • Access to a reliable vehicle to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area.
