Whether you want to work in international law, or work overseas as a corporate lawyer, global developments in politics, business, migration, environment, and human rights all guarantee the need for lawyers will grow.

Whether you want to work in international law, or work overseas as a corporate lawyer, global developments in politics, business, migration, environment, and human rights all guarantee the need for lawyers will grow.

There’s a wide range of employers who are hiring, from the public to private sector, although typically NGOs, or organizations, have far fewer resources – paid entry jobs – than the private sector.

Who works in international law, what does it take, and what do you need to know before working internationally?

Breaking into international law is not for the faint of heart, but these international lawyers attest to the unparalleled rewards of working in this sector.

International Criminal Law is a sub-sector of public international law that serves to hold perpetrators of violence—those responsible for committing atrocities—accountable for their crimes. The core offences under international law include genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression.

Human rights law encompasses both humanitarian law and refugee law. Most human rights lawyers work in the public sector, employed by governments, inter-governmental organizations and non-governmental organizations. Positions are highly sought after, and persistence is key if you want to work in this sector.

International Trade Law has become an independent field of study as most nation states around the world are members of the World Trade Organization (WTO). This sub-sector of law involves negotiating and working within trade agreements, and regulations on trade made between two or more nations. Trade agreements dictate terms for imports, exports, and specify a broad range of categories of goods, or a single category of trade goods.

International corporate law deals with issues that arise from dealings between companies in at least two different countries. Which country’s rule of law do you apply? This is a fascinating and increasingly important field of law that is continually expanding in our globalized world.
